We moved to an inclusive school district when Brady was entering 3rd grade. I felt it was important to help the children in his class understand a little about Down Syndrome and how Brady was more like them than different. In our school district, elementary school goes up to fourth grade. In third grade, we did a short introductory video introducing Brady to his class, with the help of his younger siblings.
In fourth grade, I thought the kids were old enough to learn a little bit more about what Down Syndrome was. This was the video we shared with Brady’s 4th Grade Class. Not only did the kids enjoy watching it, they also found it helped them understand more about Brady. I believe approaching his early classes in this way, by educating his peers, helping to answer their questions and thereby quelling some of their concerns, helped Brady establish some life-long friendships.
